Pros and Cons of Cutting Your Family's Hair at Home

How much money a month do you spend on haircuts? As a teenager, I became interested in cutting my brothers hair after watching my mom do it for years. I do not think either of my brothers went to a barbershop until they were 18 years old.

With so many resources to learn the skills of haircutting, it is hard not to take the time and save yourself; on the other hand, there are mistakes you will make on your hair and others as you learn. Is it worth it? Here are the pros and cons that I would consider before taking the step of doing home haircuts.

Cons of Cutting your Family's Hair at Home

1. The money you save a year is mine blowing. Are you a boy that likes to keep his hair short? Plan on $15-$20 a month for haircuts. Long hair tends to need a trim once every three or four months which costs about $20 per trim. If you have a family of four, two girls and two boys, the cost per year on haircuts would be $600; this does not include dying or other hair care. Can you think about what you could spend $600 on?
2. You do not have to wait for an appointment or leave your home. All you have to do is grab the haircutting stuff and get to work.
3. Not only does it save you money to cut your hair, but it saves you a lot of time. An hour hair Cut turned into 20 minutes at home. 
4. You get to cut your hair exactly how you would want it. Do you feel like you go to a salon or the barber and never get your hair done the way you want it? If you do it yourself, you can learn to cut your hair in line with your style. A choppy bowl cut with no bangs...why not? 
5. You can get in the shower right after you cut your hair. Do you hate being itchy all day from loose hair? I know you can get shampooed and brushed off at the salon, but there is still a bunch of strands that they miss, and you end up feeling uncomfortable. This is not the case when you get to shower in the comfort of your home.

Cons of Cutting Your Family's Hair at Home

1. You are stuck with the mess. Do you like having hair everywhere? After living in a small apartment for the past five years, the only place to cut our hair was in the kitchen; even after cleaning up the hair, I would still find loose ones floating around my kitchen for a week or two. 
2. You are more likely to get hair slivers! Yes, hair slivers are a thing, and they hurt! My husband has very stiff hair that penetrates the skin on my feet and hands as I cut his hair. Ouch! 
3. You have not gone to school to cut hair. Mistakes will happen more than once. After a long day, my little brother begged me to cut his hair. Without thinking, I forgot to put a number four on the razor and shaved a nice bald spot in the back of his head. My bad!
4. You have to buy the haircutting supplies. It is not expensive but is one more thing to buy and have. The razor, scissors, and haircutting cover add up to be about $35 or $40.
5. It takes time to learn how to cut your hair the way you like it. After a couple of hours of YouTube videos and a few haircuts later, you might discover how you want it done. Or not, and you will have to shoot for a couple more haircuts and videos and repeat.
6. Everyone's hair grows so differently! My husbands is super thick, my brother's hair is as thin as newborn babies, and my hair is somewhere in-between. The more practice you get on different types of hair, the better.
7. If you have long hair it is hard to cut it evenly alone. I often choose a more choppy haircut, so I do not have to have a perfectly straight line.
8. You don't get the top notch treatment. Is your favorite part the warm towel at the end of your haircut? If it is worth $20 to you, you should treat yourself!
